Tour Overview
Our 7-day South Morocco tour from Marrakech is a deep immersion into the scenic, historical, and cultural richness of this fascinating region. This complete itinerary will take you beyond the usual tours, exploring the majesty of the High Atlas Mountains, the living history of kasbahs like Ait Ben Haddou, the vast palm grove of the Draa Valley, the immensity of the Sahara desert with a night under the stars (possibly in Erg Chegaga, the largest dunes), the unique landscapes of the Anti Atlas, the fertile Souss region, the historic walled city of Taroudant, and the charming coastal city of Essaouira. You will return to Marrakech with a much broader understanding of Morocco's diversity.
This tour is designed for the traveler seeking a complete adventure, combining different types of landscapes and experiences, from mountains and deep desert to oases, historic cities, and the Atlantic breeze.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech - High Atlas Mountains - Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate - Draa Valley - Zagora
We will begin our extensive journey by picking you up in Marrakech. We will cross the dramatic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi N'Tichka pass, enjoying spectacular views. The route takes us to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which we will explore on foot. We will continue to Ouarzazate, known for its film studios. After lunch (not included), the route continues south through the Ait Saoune pass and the start of the lush Draa Valley, the largest palm grove in Morocco. We will arrive in Zagora at the end of the day for dinner and overnight in a Riad or hotel.
Day 2: Zagora - Draa Valley - Tamegroute (Quranic Library) - M'hamid - Sahara Desert
After breakfast, we will continue descending through the Draa Valley to Tamegroute, visiting its famous Quranic library and pottery workshops. Then, we will continue to M'hamid, the gateway to the deep desert. From here, the landscape changes dramatically. We will enter the desert in a 4x4 vehicle (if the route is to Erg Chegaga, which requires 4x4). The day ends with arrival at the great dunes of the Sahara. We will enjoy a camel ride at sunset, a traditional dinner, and a night in a Berber camp in the heart of the desert.
Day 3: Desert - Iriqui Lake (Track) - Foum Zguid - Taznakht
After enjoying the magical sunrise and breakfast at the camp, we will leave the desert. If you visited Erg Chegaga, the route takes us along a desert track through the dry bed of Lake Iriqui and the National Park, until we reach Foum Zguid. We will have lunch (not included) in Foum Zguid or Taznakht. In the afternoon, we will continue to Taznakht, a city known for its Berber carpets. Dinner and overnight in a Riad or hotel in Taznakht or surroundings.
Day 4: Taznakht - Taliouine (Saffron Capital) - Taroudant
After breakfast, we will travel west through the Anti Atlas mountains. We will pass through Taliouine, the Moroccan capital of saffron (optional visit). We will continue through landscapes of argan and almond trees until we reach Taroudant. This city, often called the "little Marrakech" because of its walls, offers an authentic and less touristy atmosphere. We will explore its medina and souks. Dinner and overnight in a charming hotel or Riad in Taroudant.
Day 5: Taroudant - Agadir (Panoramic Visit) - Essaouira (Atlantic Coast)
After breakfast, we will leave Taroudant for the Atlantic coast. We will pass through Agadir, a modern coastal city (possible panoramic stop or coffee if time permits). We will continue north along the coast, enjoying ocean views. We will arrive at the charming city of Essaouira, known for its fortified medina (UNESCO World Heritage), its fishing port, and its relaxed atmosphere. Dinner and overnight in a Riad or hotel in Essaouira.
Day 6: Essaouira (Exploration) - Marrakech
Enjoy a free morning to explore Essaouira at your own pace. Stroll along its walls, visit the port, explore the medina with its art galleries and craft shops, or relax on the beach. You will have time to have fresh seafood for lunch at the port (not included). In the afternoon, we will return to Marrakech. The trip takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Arrival in Marrakech to spend the night at your accommodation. Dinner on your own.
Day 7: Marrakech (End of Tour)
After breakfast at your Riad or hotel in Marrakech, you will have free time to continue exploring the city, visit the souks, Jemaa el-Fna square, Bahia Palace, or Majorelle Gardens. The tour ends with transfer to Marrakech airport (if you have a flight) or to your accommodation, as needed.
